Why is it like methanal has the formula HCHO and not CH3CHO even after its general formula(R-CHO) says that R represents the methyl group here????

This is the compound with minimum possible number of carbon atoms and hence, HCHO (methanal) or HCOOH (formic acid) are valid compounds.
