इस कहानी का नायक ऐसा व्यक्ति है जिसमे आत्मसम्मान की भारी कमी है। वह स्वावलंबी भी नहीं है और वयस्क होने के बावजूद दूसरे पर आश्रित है। देखा जाये तो वह अपने पैरों पर खड़ा नहीं है। उसके रीढ़ की हड्डी गायब है; इसलिये इस कहानी का शीर्षक बिलकुल सटीक है।
