Magnet is a substance which has the property of attracting objects which are made of iron, nickel or cobalt. As per traditional beliefs, magnet was first discovered in ancient Greece at a place called Magnesia. Magnets can be natural or man-made. They come in various shapes; like bar magnet, horse shoe magnet, etc. A magnet has two poles, viz. north and south poles. When two magnets are brought closer; then like poles of the magnets repel each other and unlike poles attract each other. When a bar magnet is suspended freely in air, it always points toward north-south direction.
