There are times, when we need to separate substances from a mixture. We need to separate them so that we can throw away useless item and utilize useful item. We may need to separate them so that we can use different items in different ways. Han-picking is the simplest technique of separation. Filtration and sieving are separation techniques which are used in most of the households. Threshing and winnowing are used by farmers while they process the harvested crop. Sedimentation, decantation and filtration are often used in combination when we need to separate an insoluble substance from a liquid. Evaporation is used to separate a soluble substance from a liquid. Distillation is also used to separate a soluble substance and a liquid.
