Additional copies of DNA would finally make an additional set of chromosomes. Number of chromosomes in a cell of a particular species is always fixed. Altered number of chromosomes in cells would change the characteristics in dramatic way. To maintain the unique identity of a cell, it is important to transfer additional copies of DNA to new cell.
